Two maxi-trimarans fails to claim Jules Verne Trophy

Two maxi-trimarans that began their journey on 22nd November in an attempt to get their hands on the Jules Verne Trophy ended with nothing in hand.

The battlers were the 40 meter maxi-trimaran Spindrift 2, captained by Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard, and Francis Joyon’s 31.5 meter maxi-trimaran IDEC SPORT. They sought to have the award claimed by Loïck Peyron and his magnificent crew on Banque Populaire V (which is now Spindrift 2) in January 2012.

The time to beat them was fort-five days, thirteen hours, forty-two minutes and fifty-three seconds. But neither team made it. Jules Verne Trophy has a start-end line between Le Créac’h Lighthouse off Brittany and Lizard Point in Cornwall. IDEC SPORT had started at 02:02:22 UTC while Spindrift 2 started almost two hours later at 04:01:58 UTC. They ended in reverse order.

Spindrift 2, which used to be used for Yacht Charter in Croatia, passed the end-line at 15:01 UTC in forty-seven days, ten hours, fifty-nine minutes and two seconds while at sea. This was the 2nd best time in Jules Verne Trophy’s history. The IDEC SPORT passed the line at 16:50 UTC after forty-seven days, fourteen hours and forty-seven minutes at sea. It was the 3rd best time in Jules Verne Trophy.
